The Guinness World Record Dive
Can a scuba diver survive five days and five nights underwater?
Mark Colman, an ex-member of the Royal Engineers plans to take on the challenge to break the current Guinness World Record for the longest dive in a controlled environment, which currently stands at 100 hours (4 days and 4 hours).
Mark aims to beat the current record by doing 120 hours (5 days) underwater with the dive commencing at 1000hrs on Monday 18th June 2012 and resurfacing 5 days later.
Extended submersion in water has an adverse effect on the human body as skin surfaces exposed to the water becomes saturated and will become extremely painful. Mark will be monitored throughout the challenge by a dive safety team and volunteer divers will join him to stop boredom and to keep him alert.
This will be Mark's first dive since witnessing a tragic diving accident whilst working as a commercial diver which led to him suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and stopped his career as a diver. The dive will be carried out in a film studio in Essex called The Underwater Studio www.actionunderwaterstudios.com/latest.htm
About Mark Colman
Mark Colman used to be a lot of things, including a Royal Engineer who served in the Gulf War as well as a commercial diver, working all over the UK and Europe on various underwater construction site. He was a go-getting-nothing-bothers-him sort of guy. That was until a series of tragedies and events turned his life upside down.
Two tragedies changed Mark's life including the death of a close friend in a diving accident that caused Mark to give up his career as a commercial diver as well as the loss of his sister in a car accident. Mark was then diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which left him less confident, more prone to anxiety and low self-esteem, a shadow of his former self.
However, thanks to the charity Veterans In Action Mark is now getting back on his feet and turning my life around for the better. VIA help veterans like Mark who are suffering with from the effects of war to realise their true potential by helping rebuild confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.
Mark said: "This is a very tough personal challenge as I have never dived since my career as a diver ended through illness. I have since had help for my illness from a charity called Veterans In Action that has helped me rebuild my confidence and self-belief and through the dive I will be raising awareness and funds for the charity in order to help other veterans who suffer the wounds that cannot be seen".
Combat Rocks Brighton – The Dive After Party
Long time family friend and owner of Concorde2, Tina Haynes has kindly agreed that Mark can hold his celebration party at Concorde2, which will run from 3pm – 10.30pm on Saturday 30th June 2012. Throughout the day the venue will host an array of bands, including Scottish band – The Cundeez alongside a very special guest TBA!
All proceeds will go towards Veterans In Action, a charity which was set up back in 2008 by two ex Royal Engineers to raise funds for injured troops who have suffered the effects of war.
